Note:
By O'er Comes Rustling And From Straight Till Stands Turning was composed in early 2014 for Boston Musica Viva. The piece uses both original and borrowed pitch material that is strictly horizontal, or strictly melodic in its conception and use rather than harmonic. The ensemble plays this horizontal material in several ways that obscure the melodic nature of the material by means of overlapping and conjoining many melodies at once. The piece uses fragments, and eventually the entirety of the state song of Illinois, “Illinois”, from which the title is extracted through the first words of ten different lines.
