Note:
double the half/tie the whither [below upward third fifth continued] is written in 2015 for pianist Evan Allen. The piece’s content and title is inspired by a document called “The Mental Effects and Manual Signs of Tones in Key” and its accompanying solfege exercises, which I found at the beginning of the hymnal Jehovah’s Praise. The document uses wonderfully cutting adjectives to describe each of the major scale’s notes, such as “FAH the desolate or awe-inspiring”. Much of the piece’s pitch content is purely horizontal in its conception, using many exercise-like fully complete major scales sounding at different rates to consequentially create the piece’s harmony, which is expounded on in episodes.
